Friends of the Old Station

The Old Station
Before it was closed to passengers in 1959 the Old Station at Tintern was a substantial stopping place and goods depot on the old GWR branch line from Chepstow to Monmouth, and is now an important and award-winning heritage site. Entry to the site with its traditional-style café is free and there are many attractions and activities for all the family.

Become a Volunteer
If you are interested in getting involved in the Old Station as a Friend then you can become a registered volunteer under the Monmouthshire County Council volunteering scheme by picking up a registration form from the information centre in the carriage at the station.

What we do
Friends have supported the Old Station by various fundraising schemes such as a bookstall, and an annual fun dog show. These and other activities help with such things as maintaining the green space around the station, and providing play facilities for children.

Ride – or drive – a train
Friends also help to operate a narrow-gauge (7”) passenger-carrying railway at the station which runs along the dismantled railway track. It is open most Sundays in the summer, and at £1 per ride it is very popular with all ages. If you would like to fulfil that childhood ambition of driving a train or helping to operate a railway, then we warmly welcome volunteers – over 18, no sex discrimination! For more information on this please ring The Old Station on 01291 689566.

Model Railway
The Friends are involved in reconstructing an N-gauge working model of Tintern Station, with station
buildings, track layout and scenery just as they were when the station was closed over sixty years ago.
The model will be located in one of the two GWR carriages at the site. We are also hoping to establish
in the same location a collection of pictures and memorabilia relating to the Old Station and its
history.
